About Me

Welcome! I am Melissa Merriman owner and designer for Toadally Quilts. In one way or another I have been crafting and sewing since birth. Well not quite that long, but close. I grew up with a creative family who has always encouraged my creativity in whatever form I chose, and over the years there have been many forms. Drawing and sewing have always been consistent favorites over the years. Those favorites combined with my love of animals and the great outdoors would later be the foundation of my quilting patterns.

My love for quilting started far before making my first quilt. I have always loved quilts; I would have to say one of my most favorite quilts is a well loved quilt made by my great grandmother. There is just something about curling up under an old quilt that always brings a sense of home, family and love to me. There is also something to be said about quilts passed down from generation to generation. Memories of days gone by will forever be carried on with those quilts. I made my first quilt in 1997 and haven’t stopped since. When I started quilting I enjoyed the patterns and designs that were available but I always found myself modifying, changing or adding to the patterns to the point that I just start to design my own quilts. I absolutely love the freedom and creativity I can express through the design process and the fabric, oh all that glorious fabric! — Fabric lovers, you know what I mean!

I have had many people suggest to me over the years that I start developing patterns for the original quilts that I have designed. In 2009 I made it official and started Toadally Quilts. I’m not sure that I have one specific style for my quilts. My designs range from traditional to contemporary, many influenced by nature and the world around me. I am a huge fan of batiks and reproductions. Ok, I’ll admit it, I just love fabric! I don’t think there are many fabrics I don’t like. I also know there is a time and place for all of them. I let the design dictate what fabrics I will use; however I am a firm believer in using whatever fabrics inspire you. I have seen the same quilt patterns created using different fabrics and it’s always exciting to see how unique they can become just by changing the fabric!

I believe the popularity of quilting, not just for utilitarian purposes but also as an art form has helped breathe new life into quilting. It has appealed to a whole new generation of quilters and I am honored to be among those who are able to share their unique designs with the world. Quilting is ever evolving; it has stood the test of time, and will continue far into our future.
